Bag it

messenger bag mug shot

So this last week (ish) I've been sick. Not like, Oh, I have the flu, or OMG, I'm dying of the plague, more like Ick, I feel like I've been hit by a truck and is this what getting old feels like damn this really sucks. Throw in some allergies and general female malaise (sorry dude folk) and it was a stellar week. And by stellar I mean mostly I turned into a hermit. And one day I ate nothing but donuts. Well, that's not entirely true, after the third donut I got this awful Did you seriously eat THREE DONUTS TODAY? headache, so then I ate a banana.

It didn't help.

Anyway, all that to say I got a lot of sewing done this week. I tackled messenger bags, see? SEE? The little ones are for my nieces. I LOVE having nieces because they LOVE everything you make them and they totally don't notice your mistakes.

Oh, and an apron. I made an apron too.

And some flannel PJ pants. I made those first so I could wear them all week. Proper prior planning, my friends.

Picnic time

tags: crafty me

Because, you know, I go on so many picnics. Actually, no, but it seems like it would be a fun thing to do. And then last year when I decided that I must learn how to sew, you know, with like patterns and instructions and stuff (as opposed to just winging it) I came across these in one of my sewing books and thought: it's rectangle, it's flat, I can totally do this. And then two, three, four, I don't know how many months went by and I finally got around to it.

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with sewing. I assume love must trump hate otherwise I wouldn't keep doing it. I love making homemade gifts (I was on an apron kick a while back), I love the attention to detail part, it's just that fabric is an imperfect medium (and let's face it, I am an imperfect person) and that's the part that drives me bonkers. But in a good way, sewing has taught me that the whole omg it must be perfect thing I've usually got going on is really rather stupid. Sometimes you just have to let go, ya know?

I think the other reason sewing appeals to me is due to my split personality with respect to The Rules. I love rules. I am bound by rules. I freak out when there are no rules. And then, I totally break them. Like with the aprons. I got halfway thru the first one and thought, well, the pocket isn't wide enough, and the apron isn't long enough, and the ties are just stupid...and then by the third one I was mostly back to winging it. So on one hand I get patterns and instructions and rules, and on the other hand if I don't follow them it's not really the end of the world. That said, I don't make clothes because, yeah, that would just be tragic.

Measure once, cut twice. Er, wait, what?

So that whole measure twice, cut once thing never works for me. It's more like, measure 386 times, cut once, swear a LOT. Long story short, I made curtains for my office today. And by long, I mean LONG, not in length, but in hours. My problem (one of many) is, when working with patterned fabric I get all caught up in making sure (strike that: attempting to make sure) that everything is all folded and ironed and stitched in exactly the same place, because otherwise, you know, I might go to symmetry hell. You'd think from all the swearing that comes from my room that I don't enjoy this, but actually I find it fun and relaxing. In a swearing, wtf, sort of way.

Next up, I bookmarked this weeks ago thinking ooh, I'll save this for Valentine's Day, and then I totally forgot until about 3 seconds ago. So here you go, Happy Mathy Valentine's Day. Need help?
